Basic Literacy

The standard for "basic literacy" is much higher than it used to be, and it continues to go up. In addition, Basic Literacy now includes a much broader range of skills than it used to. One's Basic Literacy skills can and should continue to be developed throughout childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. These skills should be taught and reinforced by every teacher, in every subject, with gradually increasing levels of sophistication, in every grade K through 12.

Basic Literacy includes the following skills:
  • Reading and Writing
  • Speaking and Listening
  • Counting and Calculating
  • Perceiving and Drawing
