The term mash-up was coined in 2001 to refer to a recording entitled "A Stroke of Genius" which was created by DJ Freelance Hellraiser. The recording was created by combining the vocal track from pop singer Christina Aguilera's single "Genie in a Bottle" with the instrumentals from "Hard to Explain" by New York City rock group The Strokes.

This concept of remixing or recombining elements of previously finished products in order to create something new has expanded to include not just music, but also video and even software. Remixing audio and video, or even just creatively manipulating digital photographs, can teach one a great deal about digital technology and could be highly motivating for students. However, a teacher who chooses to explore this area with students should take care to also teach the copyright issues involved.
